Time is running out!
So this weekend I am determined to film my 3 minute campaign spot for The Next Food Network Star. The last day to enter is October 15. I was so on the ball last month & then I let everything just sort of sit around.
I also have got to start sewing some more purses. I have several cut out that I just need to sew together. I have been so slack on sewing them as well. The sale is on November 20, so I have about a month to get my rear in gear.
This weekend I am catering one of my first events. It's a 30 year high school reunion in Gaffney. My friend asked me if I could help out at the last minute when her caterer backed out. She & I went to Sam's and bought a lot of pre-done food. That will save us lots of time & money. I am going to fix the desserts. I have decided on banana chess squares, orange chess squares, and pumpkin chocolate chip mini cupcakes. I think it will be fun to help out. Since Rachel & family are coming into town tonight for the weekend, I plan on driving up to Gaffney, setting up all the food & then coming back home. Hopefully it won't take me too long.

Hard Drive & Chocolate
Last night Vince came home with 2 gifts for me. The first was a portable hard drive. My computer's memory is almost full. I have a ton of pictures on my laptop. I had a couple of 1 GB thumb drives, but those are $9.99 each and don't hold a lot of pictures. Vince found a great deal on this portable hard drive & it has over 300 GB (more than my laptop!). So last night I started copying everything over to it in order to free up some space. When I hit go, it started moving over 10,000 pictures. Wow! I had no idea I had 10,000 pictures on there. That's a lot of pictures. We also moved stuff over from my really old laptop in order for the memory on it to be cleared up. It's really slow so that one took a while. I'm so glad I have these all backed up in one place now.
My second gift was a bag of Ghiradelli peanut butter chocolate squares. Yum! I had not tried these yet. They were so smooth & creamy. They just melt in your mouth.

Next Generation
I have finally joined the next generation by upgrading to a smart phone. I stopped in at the Verizon store in the mall last night just to browse & get a feel for what kind of phone I would want next. I have heard a lot about the Droid and the Blackberries. I've tried a couple of peoples' Blackberries (or crackberries as some folks call them). I just never really liked them. I wasn't that comfortable typing on the the little bitty keyboard. And I never could work the little rolling ball that good. It felt awkward to me.
So I decided to check out the Droids and see what all the fuss is about. Wow! I totally liked it as soon as I picked it up. When I say "it" I meant the 5 or 6 different models in the store. They're all very similar, with slight differences. I decided on the LG model since it was the closest to what I was already used to. It has the slide out full keyboard so I don't have to always use the touch screen keyboard.
The guy in the store gave it to me for $100 with a $100 Visa gift card rebate. So it is basically free. He also transferred all my text messages, pictures, and videos for free (it's usually $10). And then he sold me a red case for it for 25% off. I told him that 25% was my work discount on Verizon on-line & he matched it. Sweet. I am now going to be able to access my email, facebook, and the on-line world so easy at any time. I can't wait to use this phone!

Last Minute Trip to VA
Vince got a call from Uncle Alan this week to ask him if he would like to join him in Atlanta for a car race. He took off Saturday morning to meet Uncle Alan in Atlanta. I decided that I would drive to VA this weekend to see mom, dad & Kim & her family. I left Friday after work and got to Richmond by 8:30pm. Saturday morning, dad & I got up early & drove to Kim's new house (with a breakfast pit stop at Cracker Barrel). Kim & John have gotten all moved in now so I got to see their house now that it is lived in. We took a couple of van loads of things to a local community donation center. Then Kim, Elise & I went to Fredericksburg to run some errands & eat lunch.
We ate ribs at Firebirds. It's a great restaurant & the food is wonderful. I wish we had one here. I wish that about a lot of restaurants (P.F. Chang's, Chili's, The Cheesecake Factory, etc.). Kim let me walk in Wegman's which is a huge, really awesome version of Whole Foods. It's very similar to Whole Foods, but twice as large. The upstairs has many different restaurants to choose from (similar to a food court). The deli, cheese, and other stations were so large. It makes the Ingles near me look so pathetic.
When we got back to Kim's house, John had cooked us a wonderful dinner. He had even bought us a cheesecake. Dad & I got back to mom & dad's around 9:30pm. It was a long day, but nice being able to visit with the niece & nephews.
On Sunday morning, mom, dad & I drove to downtown Richmond to eat brunch. We tried the Strawberry Cafe, but they didn't open until 10am. So then we got lost a little bit & finally found The Black Sheep. It was very eclectic, but good. They had the most unusual food on their menu. I had pork chops & cheesy polenta grits.
I drove back home on Sunday. I missed Vince terribly & couldn't wait to see him. He had gotten home on Sunday morning. I'm glad we can do separate things, but I find myself wishing he was with me all the time - especially when I go a whole weekend without him.

Walk in the Rain
So our weekend went from a sweat shop to cool rain over night. On Sunday afternoon, Vince & I jumped in the car - destination unknown. Vince drove me to downtown Greenville. They had a food tasting event, but it had ended earlier in the day before we got there, so we just strolled around. Since it was drizzling all day, we took our rain jackets and umbrellas. We had Reedy Park almost all to ourselves. It was kind of nice not having so many people around. They had turned the water in the fountains pink for breast cancer awareness.
After our stroll around town & through the park, we decided to eat at Smoke on the Water. We walked right in, had great service & ate an excellent meal. I'm liking all the rainy days! It keeps all the other folks away.

Sweat Shop
On Saturday, I went to my friend, Hope's wedding. I made the wedding cake so I wanted to get there early and put the finishing touches on it (add the roses & leaves). When I arrived, the church gym was decorated so beautifully, but it was so hot in there. The church staff did not turn on the air for them the night before. My cake immediately started to melt. I was so not prepared for a melting cake. You could literally see the icing start to turn to liquid in some places. I had to push the shell borders back up on top of each layer.
As the gym started cooling off, the cake kept it's shape and the icing. Whew! Every time I've done a wedding cake, I always say I'll never do another one. It's a lot of pressure to make a perfect cake for the bride's big day. So remind me again that I dont' want to do wedding cakes. I made it up to the ceremony with 5 minutes to spare. During the entire ceremony, I crossed my fingers that the cake would be okay and not a disaster when I went back down to the gym. I was so glad that the cake stayed pretty & the bride loved it. I got lots of compliments on the taste as well.
While I was playing in the sweat shop at the church, Vince was at home dealing with a thief. Someone used his PayPal account to buy a $434 phone. He was still in detective mode when I left to go to the wedding. Hopefully, he'll get his money back quickly (the website said 10 days). Luckily, we know who the seller on ebay was, who the buyer was, her address, and the last place he used the account (which happened to be nearby in a town near the buyer). All I have to say is buyer beware.
